Drama GCSE



We are here to educate, train and develop students to excel in Performing Arts as a career. We also believe that creative subjects are a powerful catalyst for the kind of personal growth central to any academic understanding. For example, there is substantial evidence to suggest that creativity can help to develop a learner's emotional well-being and behaviour positively and successfully. We strongly believe in this and we supply courses of intellectual and practical learning experiences incorporating performance and writing.

The Drama department has developed a strong GCSE and Post 16 Level 3 and A level program. Students learn to engage as performers, directors and practitioners with published, new and self devised texts in order to explore Drama and Theatre in theoretical and practical forms.

Students have the opportunity several times through the year to develop, rehearse and perform to the public including Acting showcases, a Key Stage 4 performance and joint performances with the Performing Arts Musical Theatre department. 

When they leave Elstree UTC, Drama students are prepared for Drama and Musical Theatre school auditions and entering the professional world of theatre.

Subject Breakdown

GCSE Drama is divided into three components:

1 Understanding Drama (written exam)

In section A students answer four multiple-choice questions on professional theatre maker roles and/or terminology.

In Section B: Study of set text

In section B students answer short and extended questions on one set play chosen. The set text is one of the following:

  • Arthur Miller / The Crucible
  • Willy Russell / Blood Brothers
  • John Buchan / The 39 Steps
  • Patrick Barlow & Carl Grose /  Hansel Gretal
  • Malorie Blackman & Dominic Cooke / Noughts and Crosses
  • William Shakespeare / A Midsummer Night’s Dream

2 Devising drama (Practical)

The students are assessed on their ability to create and develop ideas to communicate meaning for theatrical performance, apply theatrical skills to realise artistic intentions in live performance and analyse and evaluate their own work.

Each student must choose to be assessed as a:

  • Performer
  • Lighting designer
  • Sound designer
  • Set designer
  • Costume designer

Costume designers may choose to include makeup and/or hair and or masks. Set designers may choose to include design of props.

For this component students are required to complete the following two assessment tasks:

  • Produce an individual Devising log documenting the devising process
  • Contribute to a final devised duologue or group performance

The devising log is marked out of 60. Each student’s contribution to the final devised performance is marked out of 20.

3 Texts in practice (practical), 20% of the GCSE, marked by AQA

For this component students must complete two assessment tasks:

  • Study and present a key extract (monologue, duologue or group performance)
  • Study and present a second key extract (monologue, duologue or group performance) for the same play.
